Reinventing Myself: A Year of Transformation and Growth

Chapter 1: A Journey Begins
In August 2021, a mother and her two young daughters set off from Hong Kong for a holiday. After two years of separation from her family in Spain due to the pandemic, she was thrilled to visit her aging grandmother. She bid farewell to her husband, gave her dog a pat, and embarked on her journey with a purple suitcase, saying, “I’ll see you in three weeks, Honey.”
However, fate had other plans. Upon landing, Hong Kong closed its borders, leaving her stranded abroad with her inquisitive children, who repeatedly asked about their father. This unexpected turn of events led them to the Gold Coast in Australia, where she hoped to forge a new life until the family could reunite.
As she sought employment, she faced a barrage of rejections, which quickly eroded her self-esteem. Lacking a professional network and relevant experience, she felt at a loss. Yet, amidst this uncertainty, a spark ignited within her.
What if…
It has now been a full year since I made the conscious decision to transform my life. I refused to accept ‘no’ as an answer. I didn’t allow rejection to defeat me, nor did I let feelings of being an outsider deter my progress. Instead, I reframed my situation with a series of ‘what if’ questions:
- What if I established my own network?
- What if I developed a personal brand?
- What if I envisioned my ideal job?
- What if I used my voice to champion causes that matter to me?
- What if I constructed a career rooted in my passions?
With these questions guiding me, I dove into writing. I penned my thoughts at dawn and dusk, expressing joy and sorrow alike. I explored my past, my present, and the future I envisioned.
I had no idea how impactful words could be, but they proved to be transformative. One word at a time, I began to rewrite my narrative, crafting the life I aspired to lead with my chosen colors. Sharing my stories of resilience and vulnerability resonated with others; what began with a handful of readers grew into a community of over 10,000 across platforms like Medium, LinkedIn, and Substack.
It was in the quiet of writing that I found my voice. I wrote to discover myself, to forge connections, and to build bridges. Words turned into chapters, chapters evolved into stories, and those stories blossomed into books.
In February 2023, I published my first book, The Lemon Tree Mindset, sharing 19 lessons from my transformation. By May, I released Conquering Your Burnout, and I recently completed my memoir, The Flight Home: 9 Countries, 9 Values, which I intend to launch in September.
I embarked on a journey I never anticipated. Leaving behind comfort for uncertainty allowed me to rediscover a passion I thought was lost, and now I’m creating a legacy for my daughters through the power of storytelling.
When life hands you lemons, consider planting the seeds to grow your own lemon tree.
