This sentiment reflects our current relationship with AI. We often see our own reflections—our fears, insecurities, aspirations, and dreams—projected onto these machines. If we feel insecure or replaceable, we fear that machines will amplify those feelings. Conversely, if we harbor a sense of optimism, we might envision machines granting us immortality. However, this projection reveals little about the actual capabilities of AI.

Humans are essentially apes who disassemble and reassemble objects, then narrate the experience. It’s understandable that we would project our characteristics onto imagined robots.

Recall those old cartoons depicting futuristic homes filled with mechanical hands? Today, we recognize that such depictions are impractical. Our understanding of computation has matured; the focus isn’t on physical manipulation but on conceptual maneuvering.

Consequently, in modern films, robots are often portrayed as machines of thought. Yet, it’s crucial to remember that these machines are created by humans, who are inherently storytellers.

Chapter 2: The Art of Storytelling in AI Development

My friend, an avid game developer, has devoted over 5,000 hours to his project. As I observe him work, I’m struck by how realistic the game appears when it’s operational—boasting stunning textures, impressive physics, and fluid animations. We are not machines designed for chess. We have evolved to thrive on Earth, intricately intertwined with the very fabric of reality. Our existence is a culmination of billions of years of evolution, leading to a unique being capable of survival and adaptation without external assistance.

Although machines may excel in certain narrowly defined tasks, feeling threatened by them is akin to fearing cars simply because we can’t run 90 MPH. Speed is merely one aspect of our vast capabilities.
