# Exploring the Role of AI in Novel Outlining

Chapter 1: The Relationship Between Humans and Technology
In this discussion, I’ll delve into the impact of artificial intelligence on my novel-writing process. But first, let's explore the historical context of our interaction with technology.
If you want to jump straight to the AI outlining discussion, feel free to skip ahead to the section titled “Finally, let’s talk about AI outlining my novel.”
I find great enjoyment in revisiting the optimistic visions of the past regarding the future. These visions encapsulate the boundless hopes and aspirations of humanity, alongside our somewhat amusing (in retrospect) misjudgments. For example, we never did achieve the dream of hovercars, did we?
This sentiment reflects our current relationship with AI. We often see our own reflections—our fears, insecurities, aspirations, and dreams—projected onto these machines. If we feel insecure or replaceable, we fear that machines will amplify those feelings. Conversely, if we harbor a sense of optimism, we might envision machines granting us immortality. However, this projection reveals little about the actual capabilities of AI.

If we analyze a "homunculus" representation of humans, highlighting the most sensitive areas of our bodies, we see that we are predominantly defined by our hands and mouths.

Humans are essentially apes who disassemble and reassemble objects, then narrate the experience. It’s understandable that we would project our characteristics onto imagined robots.
Recall those old cartoons depicting futuristic homes filled with mechanical hands? Today, we recognize that such depictions are impractical. Our understanding of computation has matured; the focus isn’t on physical manipulation but on conceptual maneuvering.
Consequently, in modern films, robots are often portrayed as machines of thought. Yet, it’s crucial to remember that these machines are created by humans, who are inherently storytellers.
Chapter 2: The Art of Storytelling in AI Development
My friend, an avid game developer, has devoted over 5,000 hours to his project. As I observe him work, I’m struck by how realistic the game appears when it’s operational—boasting stunning textures, impressive physics, and fluid animations. However, if you look closely, you can spot the imperfections.
He shared his insights: “I soon realized that replicating reality wasn’t my goal. What I’m truly doing is crafting a narrative.”
Engineers, much like the Wizard of Oz, often prefer to keep their methods hidden from view. When selling AI or any technology, the aim is to evoke wonder, even fear. While it’s impressive that machines can withstand kicks, recognize voices, or excel in chess, do these abilities truly mirror human experience? Or do they merely underscore our own complexity?
We are not machines designed for chess. We have evolved to thrive on Earth, intricately intertwined with the very fabric of reality. Our existence is a culmination of billions of years of evolution, leading to a unique being capable of survival and adaptation without external assistance.
Although machines may excel in certain narrowly defined tasks, feeling threatened by them is akin to fearing cars simply because we can’t run 90 MPH. Speed is merely one aspect of our vast capabilities.
Section 2.1: The Future of AI and Human Intelligence
While the possibility of AI surpassing human intelligence looms on the horizon, anyone claiming a specific timeline for its arrival is likely misleading. For instance, the expectation of fully functional robots in the 1960s was overly ambitious. The complexity of perceiving reality has proven far more challenging than anticipated.
Reality is not something we observe directly; it’s a complex interplay of personal objectives and obstacles. If you’re curious about this topic, I recommend watching this video for further insights.
No one fully comprehends the intricacies of human nature that remain unexplored.

Section 2.2: The Intersection of AI and Art
I have encountered AI-generated art, and frankly, it doesn't constitute great artistry. The fact that some individuals occasionally struggle to distinguish it from human-created art highlights our limited understanding of creativity, not that AI is poised to take over artistic professions.
During the pandemic, I experimented with music creation on GarageBand. Was it impressive? To some extent! However, I wouldn’t let that inflate my ego. Why? Because my efforts lacked the refinement that comes from genuine musical talent and practice. I merely played with sounds until I stumbled upon something that sounded decent.
The same principle applies to AI-generated music and art. While it can create visually appealing works based on established patterns, it falters when tasked with producing a piece that embodies the essence of AI. Art demands context—biological, evolutionary, historical, and personal—and AI lacks the capability to provide that depth.
Finally, let’s discuss how AI assisted me in outlining my novel. I input the title, a brief synopsis, and the intended tone. After providing some key plot points to guide the AI, I let it generate ideas.
What emerged was a mix of brilliance and absurdity. Occasionally, it stumbled upon significant plot elements, while at other times, it took bizarre detours that showcased its inability to adapt dynamically to the narrative's needs. It resembled a cat attempting to play the piano—sometimes striking the right notes but often missing the mark.
While it was fascinating to observe the AI aligning with insights I had developed over years, I had to act as the judge. Without my experience, I wouldn’t have discerned which suggestions were valuable and which were not. At this stage, it feels more like a novelty than a reliable tool.
Section 2.3: The Potential of AI as a Writing Aid
Currently, the AI's output is hit or miss, with a success rate of about 20%. For me, it’s still quicker to write the text myself. However, I remain open to the possibility that one day it may streamline my writing process.
As for the idea of it replacing me? I’m confidently asserting that I’m not worried about that. Challenge accepted!
