Embrace the Journey: Why Focusing on Writing Matters

The Importance of Focus in Your Writing Journey
In a recent article, I shared my experience of reaching the milestone of 100 followers—an achievement that wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from the Medium community.
Achieving My First Goal
Just 11 days into my writing journey, I hit the 100-follower mark. Eager to take things further, I enrolled in the Medium Partnership Program and committed to writing daily. By day five, I was thrilled to see my follower count soar to 203.
Reflecting on my early days, I realized that I was fixated on my statistics, constantly checking how my articles were performing. This obsession was exhausting. Initially, it felt normal to monitor my progress, curious to see how many readers enjoyed my articles, how many views I received, and whether my work was curated.
The routine of checking my stats first thing each morning soon spiraled into a compulsion, leading me to refresh my page every five minutes. This unhealthy cycle caused immense frustration, especially when my articles didn’t attract the views I hoped for, hindering my creativity and focus.
Understanding What I Can Control
Ultimately, I recognized that my focus on stats was counterproductive. The only aspect I could truly control was my response to these metrics. I am profoundly grateful for the support that helped me reach my goal, and I decided to focus on three key actions to attract 100 followers:
- Prioritize Writing: I made a conscious choice to stop obsessively checking my stats and instead dedicate my energy to writing.
- Embrace the Process: By allowing myself to write freely, I was able to double my followers in just five days, free from the anxiety of constant monitoring.
- Write for Impact: My motivation shifted from worrying about views to genuinely wanting to share my thoughts and inspire others.
My Key Realizations
Through this process, I gained several insights:
- Initially, my writing was self-centered; I was focused on personal gain rather than sharing with others.
- I lacked clarity about my purpose for writing, but now I find fulfillment in inspiring others.
- Stressing over uncontrollable factors only distracted me from what truly matters.
- Daily writing not only enhances my skills but also helps me identify my strengths and weaknesses.
As I concentrated on my writing, I found it easier to generate ideas without the pressure of my stats looming over me. Now, I limit my stat checks to once a day at noon, a significant improvement from my previous habit of checking every few minutes.

Looking Ahead
Interestingly, my articles are performing better now that I’ve shifted my focus away from stats. It’s a surprising transformation, and I hope this trend continues. I encourage you to try this approach: concentrate on what truly matters.
