Embrace Your Inner Child: Go, Prepare, and Take Action

Written on

Chapter 1: The Adventure of Laura Dekker

At the young age of 13, Laura Dekker made a bold decision to embark on a solo sailing journey around the globe. Supported by her parents but initially opposed by the Dutch courts, Laura finally received permission at 14. After 500 days of adventure, she returned home at 16, becoming the youngest person to complete a solo circumnavigation of the world.

During her interviews in her 20s, Laura reflects on what made her feel prepared for such a monumental endeavor. "With age, I've come to understand that the readiness process differs between children and adults. Children possess a lost quality that adults often lack: curiosity and a spark of wonder."

In her youth, Laura didn’t dwell on whether she was "ready." She simply felt a desire to explore, expressed it, and acted on it. "Children think in a straightforward manner—it truly is simple. You just go, prepare, and take action. It’s not overly complicated."

Many challenges children face in pursuing their dreams stem from barriers placed by adults. For Laura, it was a court ruling; for others, it may be parental restrictions. As adults, we often recreate these obstacles for ourselves. However, life can still be uncomplicated. If something matters to you, take that first step, and you’ll be on your way.

Laura emphasizes, "That feeling of 'when I'm ready' is often just a guise for making excuses." Don’t allow these excuses to stifle your ambitions. Reconnect with your inner child. Tap into that straightforward mindset, and whatever your personal adventure may be, just go, prepare, and act.
