Conquering Flat Surface Syndrome: A Path to Clarity and Order

Chapter 1: Understanding Flat Surface Syndrome
Have you ever heard of Flat Surface Syndrome? It's a pervasive condition that can wreak havoc on your mental well-being and overall quality of life!
This affliction may have taken root in you from the moment of your birth. It could be ingrained in your genetic makeup or influenced by your upbringing. Perhaps it’s a byproduct of societal norms or an unintended consequence of life experiences. Essentially, it often stems from how we were raised, just like various habits and lifestyles are instilled in us by our families, friends, schools, and broader social circles.
In simpler terms, I’m referring to clutter!
I’m not here to judge those who struggle with organization or those who don’t maintain a pristine home, office, or vehicle. Rather, I aim to capture your attention and engage you in this discussion. Is it working?
Flat Surface Syndrome, or FSS, can lead to a more severe condition known as Flat Surfitis if ignored. This latter state is extreme and can manifest in chaotic living spaces!
I’ll be honest; I am no stranger to this struggle. Despite my efforts, I find it challenging to achieve the level of cleanliness and organization I aspire to. My home is generally tidy and organized, but I still need assistance at times. I suspect many of you can relate.
There are countless psychological and practical reasons for this struggle, but ultimately, it boils down to habits we have yet to cultivate. It requires consistent practice, commitment, self-discipline, and positive reinforcement.
My personal goal is to tackle this inherited trait and create a life and environment free from Flat Surface Syndrome. Thankfully, I am mostly recovering from Flat Surfitis — that was a tough journey!
Yet, I feel its sneaky grip returning! I know what I need to do: reclaim my stability. As a wise saying goes, "I'm NOT starting from scratch; I'm starting from experience!"
To begin, I must select a project and break it down into manageable steps. I have a good idea of where to start, but that could change.
Last January (2023), I embarked on a garage clean-up project just as I began to recover from COVID-19. My husband kindly offered to handle it while I rested, but I insisted on helping. In hindsight, I should have listened! I sustained one of the most significant injuries of my life, likely exacerbated by my weakened condition post-COVID.
Now, I am slowly learning to accept my husband's assistance and the importance of rest — a challenging lesson for me, but I’m making progress.
With that in mind, I plan to approach this project deliberately and with care, allowing myself to heal while organizing. I’ll start small and gradually work through everything until the task is complete. Once I achieve that win, I’ll maintain my progress and apply this success to other areas of my life, from physical spaces to the mental clutter that has hindered my productivity.
I won’t delve into the nuances of FSS but rather encourage all of us to strive for improvements in our daily habits, choices, and mindsets. Let’s commit to our aspirations, dreams, and goals every day, allowing the healing process to unfold.
Remember, if you miss a day here and there, that’s perfectly okay! Just like maintaining a gym routine or eating well, it requires time, perseverance, and occasionally, a break. Life happens — forgive yourself and get back on track. We shouldn’t aim for perfection but strive for excellence while embracing our imperfections.
Life doesn’t need to be flawless to be extraordinary, and nurturing a healthy self-love is an essential step in that journey.
To kick things off, I’ll take a walk through my garage and jot down my ideas for organization, deciding what to keep, donate, or discard. Afterward, I’ll return to my desk and create a SMART goal for the year ahead.
I recognize there’s much to be done, and I’m unsure how my healing process will unfold or how quickly I can complete my tasks. I prefer to assume it will take longer; any early completion will be a bonus!
As I move forward, I may need to adjust my task list and timeline.
I’m curious about your experiences. What goals have you set but struggled to find time for? How do you plan to initiate change and sustain it?
I just organized my desk before writing this, and it felt fantastic! My goal is to keep it tidy and spread this newfound commitment to fend off that elusive Flat Surfitis from my home, workspace, and life!
Who's in this with me? Organizing is a rewarding endeavor!
