Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Decision
Walter sank onto his grandmother’s couch, feeling overwhelmed. He often sought her wisdom because she was non-judgmental, unlike his parents.
“You know, dear, you can’t make a choice on an empty stomach. Let me whip up some chicken soup while we chat,” she suggested warmly.
Walter chuckled, grateful for her support. “I love you for that, Grandma.”
As she headed to the kitchen, she asked, “So, what’s on your mind, Wally?”
“I had that job interview last week, and they offered me the position,” he shared.
“That’s wonderful, my dear! I knew they’d be captivated by your charming smile. But what’s bothering you?” she inquired.
“My current boss wants to promote me, which means better pay and more responsibilities — just what I’ve been longing for these past eight months!”
“I see the dilemma,” Grandma replied with understanding.
“Exactly! Now I’m torn and could really use your insightful advice,” Walter admitted.
“Centuries of wisdom, huh? Maybe I’m too old for my special chicken soup now?” she joked.
“Not a chance! You look as youthful as ever!” he laughed.
“Much better. Can I ask you something, Wally?”
“Of course.”
“Are you hesitant to decide?”
“Not exactly afraid…,” he replied hesitantly.
“You can say what you want, but remember, you can’t deceive me. The worst lie is the one you tell yourself. I believe you’re concerned that if you choose poorly, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.”
“That feels a bit harsh…” he responded.
“You know I care for you, dear, and my advice comes from love. And remember, you’re not alone in feeling this way. Let me ask you, why do we see more followers than leaders?”
“Because not everyone is meant to lead?” Walter suggested.
“And what defines a leader?” she probed.
“I’m not sure,” he admitted.
“True leaders recognize that indecision is, in essence, a choice to do nothing. They may not always make the right calls, but they are willing to face the outcomes. This approach enables them to progress in life — learning from mistakes swiftly. Others, however, shy away from accountability, preferring to let someone else bear the burden of decision-making.”
Walter listened intently, realizing the weight of her words.
“They allow others to dictate their happiness, their success, and every challenging choice. If they’ve evaded responsibility for difficult decisions throughout their lives, how can they comprehend the long-term effects this has on them?”
Feeling the gravity of her insights, Walter found himself speechless.
“My advice, love, is to decide — even though I know it scares you. Every moment you opt not to choose is still a decision to remain stagnant.”
Just then, her timer chimed. “Oh, dinner’s ready! Let’s eat!”
