Embrace the Good: A Reflection on Morality and Kindness

Chapter 1: The Essence of Doing Good
Reflecting on our lives, especially in our final moments, we tend to cherish the positive impacts we've made rather than the wrongs we've committed. This is a lesson that has been reiterated throughout our Daily Meditations, emphasizing the importance of altruism without the expectation of reciprocation.
The true reward of being a good person lies in the act itself, not in any external benefits. Unlike the transient gains of dishonorable actions, such as stealing or infidelity, the essence of goodness is its own reward.
This brings us to a crucial point:
At some point, we all face our mortality. Regardless of our beliefs about the afterlife, we will likely find ourselves reflecting on our lives. Imagine lying on your deathbed, surrounded by loved ones. Will you reminisce about the joy of deceit and betrayal, or will you feel remorse for the pain caused by your choices?
Consider the moments that define us. Will you take pride in the treasures pilfered or the relationships damaged? Most likely, in those final moments, you will look back with regret on what you perceive as missteps, while feeling a sense of accomplishment for the good you did.
Being a good person isn't inherently difficult—especially when we let go of the need for validation. For instance, when you hold a door open for someone and they walk by without acknowledgment, it can feel disheartening. Yet, we must remember: they owe us nothing.
To conclude, strive to be a good person without expecting anything in return. When kindness is met with gratitude, it becomes a delightful surprise, but our primary aim should be to do good for goodness' sake.
Do good, expect nothing.
