Chapter 1: The Challenge
Have you ever encountered a tricky question during an interview? This is one such example that tests your problem-solving abilities.
The yellow ball signifies that one ball is heavier than the others. While I believe our work should primarily support our lives and those we cherish, it’s essential to prepare ourselves for career advancements. Engaging with brain teasers like this can be both enjoyable and beneficial for sharpening your mind.
I encourage you to pause here, grab some paper and a pen, and try to solve the puzzle before reading on for the solution!
Solution Steps
Step 1: Initial Weighing
Our objective is to determine the heavier ball using the scale just three times. To start, we will weigh 4 balls against another set of 4.
Case 1:
If both groups balance, the heavier ball must be among the remaining 4 balls.
Case 2:
If one side is heavier, the odd ball is in that group. Thus, we have reduced our possibilities to just 4 balls.
Step 2: Narrowing Down
Next, we can apply a similar strategy with these 4 balls. We weigh 2 from this group against the other 2.
One of these pairs will outweigh the other, indicating the heavier ball is in that group.
Step 3: Final Weighing
Lastly, we weigh the final two balls against each other.
This final weigh-in will reveal the heavier ball, marking our answer!
