Breaking Free from Routine: Balancing the Expected and the Unexpected

Written on

Chapter 1: The Trap of Predictability

Lately, I’ve begun to feel as though this platform has become a space for confession. Just yesterday, I revealed my perfectionist tendencies; today, I find myself confronting my predictability.

Is there anything wrong with being predictable? After all, it does make me dependable, right?

While that’s true, it’s not the complete picture. Predictability can lead others to take you for granted, perceiving you as ordinary and easily manipulated. I appreciate being reliable and consistent; it’s second nature to me and prevents me from being seen as unreliable (though I suppose that's another form of predictability).

Consequently, I earned the nickname 'Common Sense.' I would assess situations, identify a relatively clear solution, propose it, and think, "Task accomplished." Generally, that was the case, but it hardly set the world ablaze.

Then, a new challenge emerged. The solution seemed straightforward once more. However, as I examined the situation, I noticed a rather unconventional option (at least for me) that could not only resolve the issue but potentially enhance our circumstances further.

Perhaps I had consumed too much coffee that day (unlikely, as I’m quite predictable with that too), but whatever the cause, I suggested this unusual alternative in the meeting.

"Bold!"

"Unexpected!"

Those were the reactions I received.

Encouraged by this feedback, I started to actively seek opportunities where my typically mundane responses weren't the only choices. Every now and then, I would take calculated risks and propose some quite unconventional ideas.

As contradictory to my nature as this seemed, I also found joy in these creative moments. Intriguingly, my colleagues’ attention and engagement shifted as well.

"Could you apply some of that creative thinking to this — ?" they would ask, presenting me with new challenges.

It appeared that my colleagues were no longer certain about what to expect from me. As I continued to challenge my self-imposed limits, even I found it hard to define what 'normal' or 'predictable' meant anymore — and it was exhilarating!

One thing became clear: my colleagues were listening. As a result, my influence and authority seemed to grow. Whether acknowledged or not, I became the go-to person for solutions, especially when faced with unconventional problems.

Bit by bit, I’m trying to replicate this approach in my writing as well. Just a little experimentation to see what happens.

If you sense a nagging feeling that you’re stuck in a routine or perhaps being too predictable, here are some tips that might help:

  1. Introduce Elements of Surprise: Occasionally, I incorporate an unexpected word or an unusual analogy in my writing. While these may seem small, your initial attempts at unpredictability don’t need to be grand; they just need to be enjoyable!
  2. Take Calculated Risks: Sometimes, I step out of my comfort zone in a more significant way by tackling a potentially controversial subject. If I feel confident about it, why not?
  3. Vary Your Approaches: My writing usually follows a standard format, but I occasionally experiment with completely different structures. I observe the reactions to these variations to gauge their effectiveness.
  4. Balance Predictability and Unpredictability: This balance is crucial. While unpredictability can be powerful, it’s essential to maintain reliability in your core values and commitments.

There’s a writer on this platform who tells remarkable stories. She adapts her voice for each piece, creating some of the most compelling content I’ve ever encountered.

Despite the shocking nature of her work, I trust her to maintain a consistent format and underlying ethos. Even when her stories are harrowing, I know she won’t be cruel or bitter. This predictability is a significant part of her power, drawing readers back time and again.

I plan to continue making changes in my own writing soon. During my "500 articles in 500 days" challenge, I’ve had ample time to reflect on what I appreciate in the works of others, what I don’t, and what I’d like to adopt or adapt in my style.

Poc-o-poc, as we say here, means "little by little." Allow unpredictability its moment to shine, and enjoy the journey!

"Embrace the unexpected and transform your routine into a masterpiece of creativity and growth."

Author's Note

Each morning at 5 AM, I rise to write. From Monday to Friday, I explore life’s subtleties through my attempts to articulate and share my thoughts. Saturdays are reserved for reflection and editing, while Sundays are devoted to scheduling my work.

This daily practice is my way of contemplating the human experience and sharing insights, one article at a time.
