Diary of an Unplanned Traveller: Embracing the Unexpected Journey

Chapter 1: A Twist of Fate
Madrid. Just a week ago, I shared my less-than-successful endeavor to spend an extensive summer in Morocco while exploring the Mediterranean. I had envisioned sun-kissed hair drifting in the summer breeze near the sparkling shores of Spain and Morocco, mingling with friends across the continent, adorned with an abundance of affordable shell jewelry.
However, that dream didn’t materialize as I had hoped. As I pen this, the tune "Periscopes" by The Beautiful Girls plays in my mind, with lyrics that resonate deeply:
"And things don’t always go the way you plan them,
But if you’re rolling with the flow well then it makes it easier,
Makes it easier to bare."
Indeed, Mat McHugh, your words perfectly encapsulate my feelings this summer.
Current Developments - I find myself back in the sun-drenched city of Madrid, and it feels wonderful to return. After enduring what seemed like the dreariest British summer in years, characterized by relentless winds and gray skies, the bright blue skies of Madrid felt like a comforting embrace on my first morning here. Is this home? At least one of them?
I can’t ignore the cozy allure of my London abode, with the pleasure of sipping warm tea while binge-watching Netflix guilt-free during the summer. However, I have reverted to my summer-loving self, yearning for a hint of warmth.
Here I am, nestled in one of my favorite cafes in Chueca, Madrid, after enjoying my go-to workout session at Síclo (which I wholeheartedly recommend if you enjoy a blend of reggaeton and techno), indulging in writing and people-watching.
Why do I feel so at ease? Because I’ve successfully located and signed for a new apartment. Some might consider achieving this just days after arriving to be quite an accomplishment, but I prefer to remain humble.
This newfound stability has allowed me to start planning my next adventures. My first spontaneous booking is a last-minute trip with one of my best friends to the stunning Alicante in the Valencian community. I’ll be departing tomorrow from Chamartín station at 7 AM, eagerly anticipating a well-deserved beach nap.
In addition, I’ve learned from past experiences and decided to take time off work to fully disconnect for at least a week while I explore.
I’ve also purchased my very first travel backpack—an exquisite Osprey I snagged at half price—ready to endure the rigors of travel across trains, buses, and cars through the Mediterranean over the next few weeks.
I plan to surprise my family in Casablanca with a long weekend visit, taking a route I’ve dreamed of since childhood. It involves traveling through southern Spain, catching a ferry from Algeciras directly to Tangiers, and then enjoying a scenic train ride through Morocco to Casablanca.
The train journeys in Morocco are truly remarkable. In addition to the pleasantly air-conditioned first-class cabins available at a reasonable cost, the breathtaking views are nothing short of spectacular.
As I glide through verdant fields and gaze at the red-brick, desert-like landscapes, these train rides have offered some of my most cherished travel experiences. The stunning vistas ignite my imagination like nothing else, and I would argue that many of my best ideas have emerged during these Moroccan train rides and while showering.
Following my long weekend in Casablanca, my plan is to return to Madrid before embarking on a work trip to New York, after spending a few days in southern Spain. Where exactly in the south will I go? True to form, I’m not entirely sure yet, but I’m excited to discover where my journey leads in the upcoming chapters...
