A Unique Perspective on the Value of Human Experience Amidst AI
Written on
Chapter 1: The Opportunity in Human Uniqueness
In recent times, substantial resources and attention have been devoted to uncovering the capabilities of Generative AI to produce even greater outputs. However, amidst this whirlwind of excitement, I propose a contrarian viewpoint: the increasing importance of our uniquely human attributes.
Consider this: as Generative AI becomes ubiquitous, doesn't this create a heightened demand for the unique insights, experiences, and intuitions that only humans can provide? This seems to be an overlooked opportunity.
An AI Star-Creating Machine
To illustrate my point, let's explore a widely discussed concept within the realm of Generative AI: the creation of a digital pop star from scratch.
Imagine utilizing Generative AI to:
- Compose music that draws inspiration from the latest chart-toppers.
- Craft lyrics that resonate and stick with listeners over time.
- Develop a persona—complete with a distinctive style and branding—that entices consumers.
With this approach, why even involve a real artist? We could generate avatars, visuals, videos, and even virtual performances inspired by legendary artists from the past—all through platforms like TikTok. The savings on tours alone could be substantial.
However, this notion isn't entirely new. Such ideas have been around for decades, dating back to groups like The Monkees—long before my time. The difference now is the automation of the entire process.
Catching the Human Wave
From my years as an entrepreneur, I've learned that to achieve significant success, one must leverage various catalysts that can lead to major shifts and waves of change. It’s challenging to predict what these catalysts will be or what the resulting waves will look like. Even with insight and data, success often depends on being in the right place with ample resources.
This phenomenon explains how wealth accumulates, even in fields that seem accessible like entrepreneurship. OpenAI, for instance, was established as a non-profit in December 2015 with substantial backing from influential figures. It transitioned to a for-profit model just four years ago.
While we may not have access to that game, we can anticipate the ensuing effects—specifically, the scarcity and value of human experience.
This brings to mind the hype surrounding Generative AI—akin to the onset of the pandemic.
The Pandemic Analogy
Reflecting on the early days of COVID-19 in March 2020, we were aware of its impending arrival yet unsure of its magnitude.
Interestingly, the companies that benefitted the most—like Zoom and DoorDash—were already positioned to address the challenges that arose. They had the resources and timing to tackle new, widespread issues.
As we navigated lockdowns, there was a collective understanding that this phase wouldn’t last forever. Eventually, sectors like in-person events and travel surged back to life, signifying a contrarian opportunity.
The surge of Generative AI might similarly offer a chance for those who can spot the next wave of human-centric experiences.
The Contrarian’s Insight
I'm not claiming that this is a guaranteed opportunity. Admittedly, I lack the foresight and resources typically necessary to capitalize on these trends. Recently, I attempted to counter the ChatGPT trend by adopting a more human approach to my writing. Despite initial setbacks in engagement, I received numerous encouraging messages from dedicated readers.
This shift indicates a reevaluation of value—perhaps the content I produced resonated more profoundly with engaged readers than with those who merely skimmed my posts.
Ultimately, we must ask ourselves: Is there a genuine demand for more content? Are we truly on the verge of transformative change through artificial means? Perhaps I’m simply ahead of the curve.
