Reflections on Self-Perception: John Wesley's Lent Questions

Written on

Understanding Self-Perception

In our journey of faith, we often grapple with complex feelings about ourselves. One of the key questions posed by John Wesley during Lent is, "Am I self-conscious, self-pitying, or self-justifying?" This prompts us to examine how we perceive our identity in the light of our spiritual beliefs.

Lord, I find myself pondering the contrast between being "self-conscious" and being "self-aware." I long to engage with the world as You do—fully present and mindful of both my inner thoughts and the beauty surrounding me. I wish to remain open-hearted, free from distractions that stem from self-obsession.

Section 1.1: Embracing Vulnerability

I seek to see past the superficial barriers and nervous exchanges that often cloud our interactions. May I reach the sacred spaces in our shared experiences, where insecurities collide yet, in Your presence, everything else fades away.

Let my spirit be whole and my hands raised in surrender, forgetting myself and fully embracing the moment. Help me to navigate uncomfortable silences without the urge to fill them with trivial chatter. Instead, may I shine as a beacon of warmth and acceptance, welcoming others into a safe space.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Challenge of Self-Pity

When faced with hardships, it's easy to slip into self-pity. You understand my struggles and the weight of disappointment I sometimes carry. We all have reasons to dwell in sorrow if we choose to do so. Yet, You have gifted me with the vision to behold Your glory, even when I often find myself trapped between reality and potential.

Father, I acknowledge the eternal optimism You've instilled in me, even when others label it as naïveté or excessive positivity. You are the God who sees me in my vulnerability, not to pity me, but to remind me of Your love and strength.

Section 1.2: Moving Beyond Justification

As I reflect, I realize I have no justification for my actions; this acknowledgment is a step toward growth. For over 13 years, I've learned the importance of admitting my mistakes, thanks to Your grace.

I am grateful for the path You've provided—through confession and repentance, I find true peace. Your sacrifice reveals our condition, guiding us through the fire of sanctification and helping us release the burdens of guilt, resentment, and defensiveness.

Chapter 2: The Gift of Freedom

In this journey, I recognize that true freedom comes from surrendering to You. I continue to evaluate my actions and take responsibility for my wrongs, joyfully embracing the process of growth.

With every step, I trust in You, the Master Sculptor, shaping me from the dust into a masterpiece. I stand in awe of the miracle of my creation, embracing the beauty of being a work in progress.
