Overcoming Fear Through Action: A Path to Personal Growth

Chapter 1: The Power of Action
In the journey of life, one crucial lesson that I've internalized is the relationship between action and fear. As David J. Schwartz eloquently puts it in his book "The Magic of Thinking Big," “Action cures fear.” This self-help classic offers practical insights that can enhance various dimensions of life—mentally, physically, and financially. While I recommend reading the entire book, if I had to distill its essence into a single takeaway, it would be this powerful statement.
As I’ve matured, I’ve recognized a vital truth: taking action fosters confidence, whereas hesitation breeds anxiety. The outcome of your efforts may not be what you envisioned, but what truly matters is having the courage to act in the first place.
A personal anecdote illustrates this perfectly: as a child, I dreamed of becoming a professional wrestler. The mere thought of pursuing such an ambitious goal filled me with dread, as the odds of success seemed nearly impossible. For years, I wrestled with the idea, until one day I envisioned my future self at 60 years old.
In that moment, I understood that what terrified me wasn’t whether I would become a wrestling star or not; it was the thought of looking back on my life decades later, realizing I had the chance to chase my dream but chose not to. That realization drove me to take action. Since 2012, I’ve had the opportunity to wrestle in diverse venues, from hotels to state fairs, and even share a few moments with WWE.
Where this adventure leads remains uncertain, but I’ve learned that every journey begins with a single step. Because I took action, I can face the future with less anxiety about the question, “What if?”
How This Relates to You
It’s natural to fear failure, and often our instinct is to avoid taking risks altogether. If we don’t attempt something, we can’t fail, which feels safe. However, this avoidance creates a different kind of fear—one that comes from never knowing what could have been. The remedy for this anxiety is straightforward: simply take the leap. If things don’t turn out as planned, at least you’ll have clarity, and that fear will dissipate because you took control of what you could.
On the flip side, the fear of living with unanswered questions about missed opportunities is much harder to overcome. So whether your aspirations involve writing, launching a business, or pursuing a wrestling career, resist the urge to overthink your potential for success. Don’t let self-doubt prevent you from taking action.
One thing I can confidently assert is this: if you don’t take any action, your answer will always be “no.” Conversely, the more you engage with your goals, the more your fears will diminish.
