# Optimal Washing Frequencies for Towels and Bedding

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Clean Linens

How often should we clean our towels and bedding? This question has diverse answers, but scientific research provides clarity on the recommended frequencies.

This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.

Section 1.1: Understanding the Need for Cleanliness

We spend a considerable amount of our lives sleeping—approximately a quarter of a 75-year lifespan. This makes it essential to rest in a clean environment. Professor Rietie Venter from the Clinical and Health Sciences Department at the University of South Australia conducted a study on the proper intervals for washing pillowcases and towels. Her findings were published on “The Conversation.”

Interestingly, individual habits vary significantly. A study in the UK found that many single men left their bedding unwashed for up to four months. "Four months is clearly excessive, but what is the optimal washing frequency?" Professor Venter queries.

Section 1.2: Washing Frequencies for Different Items

Pillowcases and towels serve different purposes, which means they should be laundered at varying intervals. According to Professor Venter, pillowcases should ideally be washed every week to two weeks, while towels should be cleaned every few days.

"Who doesn’t enjoy the sensation of fresh sheets or the aroma of a newly laundered towel?" she asks. The reason for more frequent washing of towels lies in their usage; they collect numerous skin cells and microorganisms during baths or showers.

"Since towels are often damp after use, they create a perfect environment for bacteria and mold growth," she explains. Additionally, bedding accumulates sweat and dead skin overnight unless one doesn’t sweat excessively.

Section 1.3: Addressing Odors in Towels

If towels still emit an unpleasant smell despite regular washing, it may be due to them being left in the washing machine for too long. Bacteria can multiply rapidly in damp conditions, doubling every half-hour. To combat this, it's advisable to hang towels up immediately after washing, preferably outdoors when possible.

For effective cleaning, a wash temperature of over 60 degrees Celsius is recommended. If energy savings are a priority, lower temperatures can be used alongside a cup of vinegar for freshening up the laundry. Don't overlook the importance of cleaning the washing machine itself, where bacteria can accumulate.

Chapter 2: Frequency of Bedding Washing

When it comes to bedding, how often it should be washed depends on factors like personal hygiene habits. Those who shower before bedtime may not need to wash their sheets as often, whereas those who go to bed after a long day of activities might require weekly washes.

Section 2.1: Innovations in Laundry Products

New market offerings include quick-drying or antibacterial towels and bedding. While these materials may dry faster due to their synthetic composition, they can also lead to increased perspiration. Some products incorporate nanosilver to inhibit bacterial growth, which may help with odor reduction. However, these items do not eliminate dirt such as dead skin or sweat.

"As much as I'd like for sheets and towels to self-clean, that's simply not the case," concludes Professor Venter.

The second video, How Often You Should be Washing Your Towels + How to Keep them Fresh, provides additional insights into towel maintenance and freshness.
