Chapter 1: Embracing the Shift to Full-Time Work
Starting your first full-time position as an adult can be quite daunting.

To kick off this discussion, I want to acknowledge my fortunate position. I landed my first full-time job shortly after finishing university in my early 20s. This isn’t the reality for everyone; many individuals must enter the workforce before they hit 23. I have immense respect for those who face numerous challenges to make ends meet. Despite my good fortune, I’ve still encountered my share of obstacles.
Being a type-A planner with lofty aspirations, I was often the one who annoyed classmates with my relentless ambition. Throughout my school years, I was highly motivated and found it easy to push myself. Finally, I achieved what I had been striving for: a job. While it wasn’t my dream role and didn’t align with my studies, it was a stable and well-paying position. I finally felt like an adult, as though all my hard work had paid off.
Yet, alongside this sense of accomplishment came feelings of stagnation. I found myself without new goals to pursue. My dreams seemed to fade away. Although I continued my studies on the side, I struggled to find motivation in my learning. Was this what adulthood was destined to be? Working from 9 to 5, returning home, and merely waiting for the next day to arrive?
After a few months, I recognized that I needed to change my approach right from the start of my career, or I would face decades of monotony. Here are three strategies I adopted.
Section 1.1: Discovering a Hobby
People often advised me to find a hobby. As someone who has always enjoyed writing, I conducted a quick online search and discovered Medium. This platform has become a fantastic creative outlet for me. Instead of zoning out in front of the television after work, I now look forward to writing. It has provided me with something to engage with beyond my job.
Any hobby can offer this kind of escape. I appreciate writing for several reasons: I’m passionate about it, it can be done anywhere at any time, it’s cost-free, and I have complete autonomy over it.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Importance of Physical Activity
Physical exercise is crucial for enhancing mood, especially since I spend all day at a desk. Establishing a routine that incorporates physical activity is vital for my mental health.
Initially, I found daily gym visits uninspiring. Instead, I opted to participate in team sports. This not only allowed me to forge friendships outside of work but also ensured that I had a regular schedule to stay active.
I also realized that structured group classes at the gym motivated me more than solitary workouts. There are countless ways to incorporate exercise into your life; you simply need to be open to exploration.
Section 1.2: Waking Up with Intent
This suggestion largely hinges on your morning routine. I have always been an early riser; however, when I first started my job, I often woke up at the last minute and rushed to get ready. Now, I choose to rise at least an hour earlier than necessary. This extra time feels like a gift, allowing me to focus on activities that bring me joy—whether it’s writing, reading, or taking a walk. I arrive at work feeling more prepared for the day ahead, having already invested time in myself.
What strategies do you use to maintain your well-being while working full-time? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
