Imagine the intricate inner workings of your mind as it intertwines with countless other realms in what can be described as an "Enchanted Loom."

Our minds are continuously buzzing with trillions of pieces of information. Even during sleep, a form of consciousness persists. Whether you’re dreaming or merely resting, an awareness continuously pulses through your brain.
Within your head, there exists an astonishing 100 billion neurons. These brain cells are interconnected through trillions of synapses. Every moment, electrical signals traverse these pathways from one thought to the next. The sheer number of synapses is mind-boggling, complemented by glial cells—up to fifty for every neuron—that bind everything together.
Nobel Prize-winning physiologist Sir Charles Sherrington was the first to identify and name neurons and synapses, marking only the beginning of our journey into understanding the mechanisms that allow you to engage with this text.
He poetically referred to the brain and its intricately woven structures as "an enchanted loom."
Electrochemistry reveals that this diversity sustains a world propelled by photosynthesis. To put it simply, if you’re sharing this with children: The sun extracts nourishment from the earth, we, along with other creatures, consume it—often each other—and thoughts emerge from the energy accumulated.
The sheer scale of activity involved in a single thought within our electrochemical brains is astonishing. The sensory signals we process in mere milliseconds help us recognize food, a friend, a poem, or a work of art.
As an aspiring amateur astronomer, when I first learned about our 100 billion neurons, I was struck by the knowledge that astronomers estimated there are also around 100 billion stars in the Milky Way and potentially another 100 billion galaxies beyond it.
Isn’t that incredible?
This means our 100 billion neurons have the capacity to conceptualize 100 billion stars—or more—radiating light and influencing other planets and people within our own galaxy, alongside another 100 billion galaxies.
There must be a vast expanse of thought occurring on numerous levels, with countless echoes of stellar energy transforming into electrochemistry that leads to consciousness. Yet, crucially, Earth remains the only known realm that nurtures life—human life, diverse biological life.
Perhaps “100 billion” serves as a general term aimed at aiding comprehension of the unfathomable. After all, astronomers are continuously uncovering billions more galaxies in the universe.
Since those early discoveries, numbers that once seemed unimaginable have only grown—except for our brain’s neuron count.
Maybe such staggering figures can motivate us to recognize the rarity, value, and beauty of consciousness. Our world deserves our care and attention.
