Letting Go: Embracing Change and Self-Love

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Need to Let Go

We all encounter moments when we know it's time to release something from our lives, yet we often choose to cling to it. This may stem from a desire for comfort or a fear of what lies ahead, leading us to settle into unsatisfactory situations.

Here’s how I found myself in a challenging circumstance and the lessons I learned the hard way.

Section 1.1: My Challenging Situation

As discussed in my earlier writings, I've been navigating a breakup for several months now. This experience has been particularly tough for a multitude of reasons, chiefly the resentment I've developed over the compromises I made throughout the years. I relocated to my ex's home country, which meant that I spent most of my time immersed in her family, friends, and surroundings.

Section 1.2: Ignored Warning Signs

I often felt compelled to sacrifice time with my own family and friends around the world. I found myself agreeing to things I truly wanted to decline. My boundaries and beliefs were set aside, as it seemed like the only path to ensure my survival in that relationship. I overlooked issues that were fundamentally unacceptable to me, paralyzed by the fear of voicing my needs.

Subsection 1.2.1: Reflection and Awareness

The moment I recognized that my happiness and well-being were being compromised under the guise of "security," I still hesitated to walk away. The apprehension of the unknown loomed large, trapping me in a cycle of compromise despite my unhappiness. I recall having an intuition that I was heading for pain, yet I stayed put, betraying my own needs repeatedly.

Chapter 2: The Turning Point

When You Need to Let Go - This video discusses the crucial moments when letting go becomes essential for personal growth.

The realization that I had to release this relationship was one of the most challenging insights I've ever faced. The pain and disrespect I endured outweighed my fear, which ultimately propelled me to let go. Parting with the future I had envisioned was terrifying, but I could no longer sustain a version of myself that consistently betrayed my own needs.

Section 2.1: The Healing Journey

After the decision to let go, I began to prioritize my boundaries fiercely. I refuse to compromise myself for anyone—be it a friend, family member, employer, or partner. I've learned that it's perfectly acceptable to say no while still being kind. To declutter my mind, I deleted my personal Instagram account, recognizing that social media often breeds comparison and unnecessary anxiety.

My focus has shifted back to my family and close friends. After spending 11 years away for education and relationships, it's time to cultivate deeper connections. I've been attending therapy regularly since 2019, which has been invaluable in helping me navigate grief and understand that seeking help should be a constant, not just a reaction to crises.

I’m committed to self-care as never before. This includes staying hydrated, being mindful of my nutrition, exercising daily, and ensuring I get 7–8 hours of sleep. The first two hours of my day are dedicated solely to me; I wake up, pray, prepare, and write without letting my 9–5 hinder my creative goals.

Section 2.2: Embracing My Feelings

I allow myself to experience my emotions fully. If I feel sad or overwhelmed, I take the time to sit with those feelings. Ignoring them isn't a solution. I've also released the pressure of trying to be perfect for others. For years, I strived to be the ideal partner, daughter, and friend, but I've come to realize that I don't have to carry that weight. I'm embracing my humanity, mistakes and all.

Section 2.3: Life Lessons Learned

  • Your happiness should never be sacrificed.
  • Don't allow fear to dictate your decisions.
  • Have the courage to express your thoughts and feelings.
  • Endings can also signal new beginnings.
  • Letting go is a profound act of self-love.
  • If something is causing you pain, it's time to release it.
