Investing in Your Health: It's Not Selfish, It's Essential

Chapter 1: Understanding Health Priorities
Caring for your health is not an act of selfishness; rather, it's vital for your overall well-being. My message is directed towards those who find themselves too occupied to focus on their own needs.
As a kinesiologist, I find the initial session with a new client to be both intriguing and challenging. This first 45-minute meeting, which I refer to as the 'initial intake' session, is more about dialogue than physical activity. Unlike some health professionals who may jump straight into assessments or workouts, I prefer to delve into understanding my clients' perspectives. My goal is to uncover the obstacles they face in achieving their desired lifestyle.
Despite the uniqueness of each client’s journey and medical background, a common theme frequently emerges. Many individuals believe that their biggest hurdle in pursuing a healthier lifestyle is a lack of motivation or even laziness, but the reality often runs deeper.
For numerous adults, the primary barrier lies in the belief that they either lack the time or resources to make meaningful health changes, or they feel unworthy of investing in their own well-being.
Many of us juggle so many responsibilities that self-care falls to the bottom of our to-do lists. I often hear about work obligations or children's extracurricular activities interfering with fitness routines and dietary choices. While these may sound like excuses, I encounter clients who genuinely feel they cannot focus on their health until they have completed their extensive daily tasks. Some even express that prioritizing their health feels irresponsible or selfish.
"You cannot pour from an empty cup."
While I refrain from offering advice during the first meeting (I find that listening is more effective initially), I do pose a question: How would your life change if health became a priority? This simple inquiry often leads many to realize that even a modest investment in their health can yield positive effects on other stressors in their lives, including work, relationships, and ironically, their health.
It may be difficult to accept, but neglecting your health for the sake of others or responsibilities is not a noble act. In truth, it is more selfish to ignore your health when others depend on you.
It's time to start prioritizing your well-being so you can present the best version of yourself to those around you. Even if you can spare just 5–10 minutes a day, this small commitment can trigger a powerful ripple effect throughout your life. Here are some practical suggestions to utilize that brief period:
- Take a walk outside to enjoy fresh air.
- Dedicate a few moments to deep breathing for stress relief.
- Engage in a quick mobility routine before bedtime to alleviate joint pain.
- Complete a short core workout during your lunch break for an energy boost.
- Step away from your desk to soak up some sunlight.
- Prepare a simple lunch the night before to avoid the temptation of eating out.
Though these may seem like minor adjustments, they can serve as a springboard for more significant changes in the future. After all, one of the most significant challenges for many is overcoming inertia. Once you take that initial step and experience its benefits, subsequent steps become increasingly manageable.
I've observed that individuals who begin prioritizing their health often discover they have more time in their days, as their productivity and motivation levels rise significantly. Yes, adding another task may feel daunting, but trust that this choice will enhance your work-life balance over time. I've witnessed this transformation repeatedly, and I am confident you too can cultivate a healthier relationship with your well-being without making drastic sacrifices.
