Five Remarkable Free Mac Utilities Worth Paying For
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Free Mac Utilities
MacOS offers an extensive array of applications, available through the App Store and other sources. Whatever task you wish to accomplish on your Mac, there's likely an app designed for it—echoing a well-known slogan from Apple's iPhone marketing.
Occasionally, I stumble upon certain applications that impress me so much that I would willingly pay for them. Surprisingly, they are all free. Let's dive into these incredible tools.
Chapter 2: OnyX
OnyX is a utility I've relied on for years to clean and optimize Mac systems. It's one of the first recommendations I make for Macs that aren't performing at their best.
This application can verify the filesystem structure, clear app caches and logs, and rebuild the Spotlight index, among other tasks. While you can achieve many of these functions using Disk Utility, OnyX conveniently consolidates maintenance and cleaning tasks into a user-friendly interface.
Having used OnyX since at least 2008, it remains a favorite among my Mac utilities. Just remember to download the version that corresponds to your macOS release, as there are specific versions for Ventura, Monterey, and others.
Chapter 3: NightOwl
The introduction of dark mode in macOS 10.14 Mojave thrilled me, as it's one of my preferred user experience features. However, I sometimes like to switch back to the traditional light mode.
While it's possible to change this setting via System Preferences or System Settings (Ventura), it requires too many clicks for my liking. NightOwl provides a quick solution.
This tool resides in the Finder bar, allowing me to switch modes with a simple right-click. Additionally, left-clicking offers more options, including scheduling mode changes based on sunrise/sunset or a specific time. NightOwl even allows me to exempt certain apps from dark mode, a feature that Apple doesn’t provide.
Chapter 4: The Unarchiver
While Apple’s built-in Archive Utility is adequate, it has limitations regarding supported formats. Enter The Unarchiver, a free tool that can handle more file types than Apple's utility and performs exceptionally well.
The Unarchiver supports various archive formats, including some that I’ve never encountered before. Although you may not frequently need these types, having a tool that can handle them is invaluable.
Chapter 5: ImageOptim
Images can enhance a webpage but also hinder its performance if not optimized properly. While there are online options for image optimization, such as TinyPNG and Kraken, I prefer ImageOptim, which operates locally on my Mac.
This allows me to optimize images without uploading them elsewhere, aligning with my desire for privacy and control.
Chapter 6: AppCleaner
When uninstalling apps the conventional way—by dragging them to the trash—leftover files like preferences and caches can remain. This can lead to persistent issues if you plan to reinstall an application.
AppCleaner excels at thoroughly removing all associated files, ensuring a clean uninstall that resolves potential issues.
Chapter 7: Conclusion
These five free Mac utilities are not just excellent; I’m genuinely surprised they're available without cost. If the developers decided to charge for them in future versions, I would understand. Each offers significant functionality that, in my view, should be integrated into macOS itself—perhaps one day.
For now, I’m grateful they remain free because, as I often say, free is a fantastic price.
