# Embracing Routines: Why Repetition Can Spark Joy

Written on

Chapter 1: The Misunderstood Nature of Routines

Routines often get a bad rap, but recent findings suggest they may be more beneficial than previously thought. While it's true that engaging in the same activities repeatedly can lead to feelings of stagnation, a new study indicates that these repeated experiences may actually hold more value than we realize.

Some people choose to vacation at the same destination each year, much to the chagrin of others who view this practice as a waste of precious time. "Life is too short for the same old routine," they argue, and they have a point. Consistently opting for the familiar without exploring new experiences can lead to a sense of dullness and monotony.

However, Ed O’Brien's research at the University of Chicago offers a fresh perspective on this issue. His study highlights the unjustified stigma surrounding habits. "Many repeated experiences are more enjoyable than one might assume," O’Brien states. This phenomenon occurs for two key reasons: familiarity can enhance joy and significantly reduce discomfort.

In a series of seven experiments involving nearly 3,400 participants, O’Brien explored various repeated activities, such as revisiting museums, rewatching films, or replaying video games. Participants typically expected these experiences to be tedious. Yet, those who engaged in these activities often found greater enjoyment than anticipated.

But why is this the case? When revisiting a museum, we might notice different artworks compared to our first visit. Returning to a holiday spot can reveal hidden gems, and replaying a video game can introduce new strategies. What initially seemed like a mundane repetition transforms into an opportunity for fresh discoveries. O’Brien notes, "When individuals shy away from repetition out of fear that the familiar will lose its charm, they risk missing out on valuable experiences."

This misconception stems from the tendency to believe we've fully comprehended an experience after a single encounter, leading us to underestimate the enjoyment that can come from revisiting familiar activities.
