Recently, scientists in China revealed the discovery of a minuscule crystal made of an unidentified mineral within these samples. Consequently, China has become the third country to identify new materials from lunar soil, joining the ranks of Russia and the United States.

The newly identified mineral, named Changesite-(Y) after the Chinese moon goddess, is the sixth material cataloged on the lunar surface. This phosphate mineral, characterized by its columnar crystal structure, has generated excitement due to its unique contents. Within Changesite-(Y), researchers discovered Helium-3, a rare isotope of helium that has long intrigued scientists for its potential applications.

Helium-3's Allure

Helium-3 is continuously emitted from the Sun and carried through the solar system by solar winds. However, only a minimal amount manages to penetrate Earth's atmosphere. Unlike Earth, which has a magnetic field, the Moon has accumulated substantial quantities of this isotope due to solar winds.

The scientific community has been captivated by Helium-3 due to its rare properties. It can achieve temperatures close to absolute zero, offer a non-radioactive alternative for medical imaging, and potentially aid in the detection of nuclear weapons. However, its most promising application lies in its potential as a nuclear fusion fuel. Insiders speculate that just one gram of Helium-3 could replace 125 tons of coal, meaning that eight tons of Helium-3 could yield the energy equivalent of one billion tons of coal, with significant environmental advantages.

Even though Helium-3 produces fewer radioactive byproducts than conventional nuclear fusion fuels, the technology for fusion remains underdeveloped. Experts generally agree that a fusion reactor using Helium-3 will not be realized until at least the middle of this century.

The Future of Helium-3

Despite the long timeline for fusion technology, Helium-3 continues to be valuable. Following its utilization in neutron detectors, its demand and price have surged, currently estimated at around $1400 per gram. The Moon is believed to harbor approximately 1.1 million tons of Helium-3, worth an astonishing $1.5 quadrillion. This immense potential has sparked interest from China and other nations regarding future lunar mining endeavors.

China's ambitions extend to multiple lunar missions planned for the next decade. Notably, the U.S. Nuclear Corp. and Solar System Resources Corporation have recently signed a letter of intent for the extraction of 500 kilograms of lunar-sourced Helium-3 between 2028 and 2032.

Chapter 2 The Feasibility of Lunar Mining

While mining operations on the Moon could theoretically have minimal impact, with its mass being 73 quadrillion tons, there are significant challenges ahead. Even if one ton of Helium-3 were extracted daily, it would take an astonishing 220 million years to deplete just 1% of the Moon's mass. Such a decrease would be insufficient to alter the Moon's orbit or its gravitational effects on Earth.

However, questions arise regarding the extraction and transportation of Helium-3 from the Moon to Earth. China has not publicly disclosed the concentration of Helium-3 in its lunar samples, leaving uncertainty about the amount of regolith required to yield a gram of the isotope. The costs of transporting it back to Earth are also likely to be substantial.

Dr. Ian Crawford, a professor of planetary science and astrobiology at the University of London, argues that relying on lunar Helium-3 extraction may not be practical. He suggests that to sustain a global energy system based on Helium-3, 5000 square kilometers of lunar surface would need to be mined to a depth of three meters annually. His research indicates that such intensive extraction could exhaust lunar Helium-3 reserves within 200 years, which contradicts earlier estimates by Chinese scientist Ouyang Ziyuan of a 10,000-year sustainability.

The Geopolitical Landscape

The renewed interest in lunar resources parallels the space race of the Cold War, which was driven by political and technological supremacy. Today's competition is more focused on establishing a presence on the Moon and initiating extractive operations.

The Moon's rich resources have heightened international tensions, particularly between China and the United States. China plans to construct a research station at the Moon's south pole, an area where NASA is already conducting scouting missions. The U.S. aims to return astronauts to the Moon by mid-decade as part of its ambitious plans, which include the Gateway space station and a future lunar outpost.

The Artemis mission has faced delays, but China's recent approval to launch three lunar orbiters in the next decade has accelerated U.S. efforts. Moreover, nations like India and South Korea have expressed interest in lunar mining, with the United Arab Emirates planning to operate an aircraft on the Moon this fall.

The Role of Helium-3 in Global Politics

As the interest in the Moon intensifies, Helium-3 remains a key factor driving this renewed focus. However, this raises critical questions about lunar ownership and the implications for international relations. Although the 1967 Outer Space Treaty prevents nations from claiming sovereignty over the Moon, it does not stop commercial entities from asserting ownership of lunar resources.

As lunar resource extraction progresses, the legal and political ramifications of such claims are becoming increasingly complex.
