Two Candid Reasons for Not Following You Back on Social Media

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Authenticity

In today's digital landscape, building a genuine following is essential. If you aim to attract a readership, it’s crucial to offer engaging content.

"This is the magic of content creation: it allows you to peel back layers of fear and embrace your authentic self, often while being compensated for it. Truly a win-win situation."

This thought has lingered with me for a while, and it’s time to express it. I’m not here to voice any controversial opinions today; we can save that for another occasion.

While I appreciate the notifications of new followers, I often feel disheartened when I check their profiles and realize I won’t be following them back.

For context, I tend to overlook profiles without a photo. I recognize that these accounts may belong to readers, spam bots, or mere observers. However, I’m intrigued by profiles that do feature images.

With that said, here are two straightforward yet candid reasons why I might choose not to follow you back.

Section 1.1: Lack of Engaging Content

  • You are not sharing anything that piques my interest.
  • You registered on this platform under your name. Take a moment to reflect on that.

You didn’t join as "Housekeeping Tips," "Nutrition Weekly," or any other generic title devoid of personality or emotion.

The question is: who are you?

I’m not interested in a simple list of tips on topics I can easily search for online, nor on things I would never consider Googling. I want to explore the life narratives behind the names I see. I want to comprehend who you are and your journey—what defines you?

Being open and vulnerable is undoubtedly intimidating. I’ve experienced my fair share of anxiety when hitting the publish button, my heart racing in anticipation. Perhaps one day I’ll share a compilation of pieces that compelled me to embrace my identity, regardless of the potential backlash. However, the rewards of courage are substantial when you allow yourself to embrace it.

Section 1.2: The Need for Consistency

  • If what you write interests me, it’s not consistent enough.

Building a community requires regularity. It’s disheartening to get excited about a fellow writer’s journey only to see them vanish for various reasons. I can relate to the disappointment of being let down by numerous creators whose work I appreciated, only to find that they no longer provide content for me to anticipate. It’s genuinely disheartening.

If you genuinely want to grow a following, at the very least, you should provide them with something to read! It’s a simple expectation, right?

Chapter 2: A Call to Embrace Your Talent

I want to express sincerely: many of you possess remarkable talent. I see it in the well-crafted sentences filled with humor and insight in your comments on my articles, or the rare stories you share throughout the year. I encourage you to either start writing more or take your craft more seriously.

Of course, you owe me nothing, but you owe it to yourself to pursue your passion wholeheartedly.
