A Test of Faith: Confronting the Unthinkable

Chapter 1: Gathering at the Mennonite Home
“There’s another Mennonite household nearby. Let’s convene there,” suggested the Mennonite leader, Patrick. As they exchanged introductions, the weight of their circumstances briefly lifted. When the homeowner mentioned an abundance of food, the atmosphere lightened even more.
Patrick inquired, “How did you manage to gather so many firearms?” Adam, equally astonished by the impressive collection, replied, “I asked some of my comrades if I could borrow their firearms for teaching my boys how to maintain them.” This was indeed the truth; he had requested a few military friends to lend him their weapons for the long holiday, knowing they trusted him and his family. They appreciated the opportunity for free maintenance on their guns and a chance to instill discipline in Adam's boys.
“We appreciate your assistance,” Patrick said with a smile.
Once they arrived at the neighboring house, they settled in just as the storm began to rage. With a spacious basement, they felt secure against whatever the tempest might unleash. Children like Jacob and Isaiah quickly engaged with the toys, filling the room with laughter.
“Our aim is not to resort to firearms, despite your skills and courage,” Adam explained to the group, who listened intently. “Rather, we need to drive the intruders from our homestead. It’s crucial to understand their plans to invade additional homes. This is an opportunity to observe and learn.” The realization began to dawn on them that this assault might be part of a larger scheme threatening their community.
Adam selected a few individuals to instruct on weaponry and strategy, directing them to teach others what they had learned. The atmosphere in the house shifted from lighthearted chatter to focused, serious discussions.
Patrick took Adam aside, his expression serious. “Is there something you haven’t told us?”
Taking a deep breath, Adam shared, “I understand this may sound far-fetched, but there’s a long-standing conspiracy designed to create societal chaos. I can't divulge everything, but this attack seems to be a calculated maneuver by the conspirators. They likely anticipated little resistance since your community is unarmed. I suspect the police are involved.”
“Is this really happening? How extensive is this conspiracy?” Patrick’s questions were valid. Adam wished he could provide all the answers, but that would require more time than they had. He sensed there was more to the conspiracy than even he and Lara understood.
“My primary objective is to assist you and your families. However, I must also do my part to stop those behind this plot. Are you with me?” Patrick had to search deep within himself; Adam had already accepted his new role weeks ago.
“There’s a laboratory that’s been operational for decades. We believe it was originally located in the east, but now it’s likely on the Fort Riley Army Base. My wife and father are there, and I fear they’ve been captured. If we can reach this lab and dismantle it, we could significantly disrupt the conspiracy. There’s something there that seems to control people.” Adam refrained from mentioning that the very firearms he had provided to the Mennonites were the tools of that control.
Being a faithful community, they should be safeguarded against the guns’ subliminal influences. In truth, they might be the only ones capable of aiding Adam. It was likely no coincidence that he found himself allied with this group.
“Can violence really prevent violence?” Patrick asked thoughtfully.
“As I said, it’s not my intention for anyone in your community to use guns, but having firearms for protection is wise. These individuals are dangerous and won’t hesitate to harm women and children.” Patrick nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation.
“We believed we would be safe here; Kansas is known for its acceptance,” he lamented, sorrow evident on his face. His community had fled persecution only to find a new home that felt equally oppressive.
“This isn’t oppression targeted at a single group; this conspiracy aims to undermine all of humanity. This is much larger than you and me,” Adam replied. Patrick scrutinized Adam, trying to determine whether he was mad or telling the truth. The decision rested heavily on Patrick’s shoulders, and he felt the weight of that responsibility.
“Let’s pray together, Adam. It’s the only path to success,” Patrick urged. They bowed their heads, united in prayer.
