Chapter 1: Unveiling the Paranormal
Annie Jacobsen’s book, Phenomena: The Secret History of the U.S. Government’s Investigations into Extrasensory Perception and Psychokinesis, invites readers who are open to unconventional ideas to delve into a captivating narrative. This book provides insights valuable for anyone looking to innovate in business or other fields.
The narrative intertwines notable figures such as Aldous Huxley, spoon-bender Uri Geller, the CIA, and the lesser-known Defense Intelligence Agency, alongside military elite like Delta Force and historical figures including President Ronald Reagan. Not to mention, Ed Dames, who is said to have inspired the film The Men Who Stare at Goats featuring George Clooney. The book is rich with intriguing characters and events.
The story begins in the aftermath of World War II, during the height of the Cold War, when anxiety about Soviet activities surged. Fearing that the Russians were engaged in psychological operations (psyops), the U.S. Military invested substantial resources into research, particularly in the area of remote viewing. This practice involves trained individuals attempting to visualize events occurring in distant locations using only their minds.
This exploration sometimes ventured into precognition, where practitioners reportedly had visions of future incidents. For instance, through extrasensory perception, one individual foresaw the kidnapping of a senior military officer by a group known as The Red Brigades, an anti-NATO organization. When the kidnapping occurred, remote viewers were enlisted to assist in locating both the abductors and the officer, leading to skepticism from seasoned military leaders. One colonel dismissed the practice, stating, “Nobody believes in this nonsense.” However, interest grew, and according to remote viewer Dale Graff, one open-minded commander sought out the insights he had to offer, saying:
Here was a commander who knew his stuff […] Great men don’t become great leaders by being narrow-minded. He wanted knowledge, and I had the information. He was genuinely interested in what I had to say.
Ultimately, with assistance from the psyops team, the hostage was successfully rescued. This is just one of many remarkable instances chronicled in the book.
