Mastering Problem-Solving Skills for Everyday Life

Chapter 1: Understanding Problem-Solving
In his insightful article, "Forget about algorithms and models — Learn how to solve problems," author Ari Joury, PhD, emphasizes a critical approach that transcends programming contexts. He references Abraham Lincoln's famous quote: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." Joury underscores the importance of taking the time to thoroughly understand a problem and develop high-level solutions before diving into action. This notion is not just applicable to technical tasks but is a valuable life lesson as well.
Taking a comprehensive view of a problem, along with its finer details, is essential. Before anything else, it's crucial to ensure that we fully grasp the issue at hand. This initial step in Joury's process resonates deeply with me. I also believe that asking clarifying questions is vital.
Effective communication is key to true understanding. It's unproductive to assume that we comprehend each other perfectly. I've spent countless hours with my husband trying to clarify our thoughts, only to discover we were expressing the same ideas in different ways. This phenomenon of "speaking different languages while using the same words" highlights the necessity of clear communication. It is vital to ensure alignment in our discussions.
Some may mistakenly view my habit of seeking clarification as a weakness, assuming it indicates ignorance. However, this practice often reveals misunderstandings and fosters better comprehension among others. I've been thanked for my efforts by people who felt hesitant to ask questions themselves.
It's important not to misconstrue inquiries for ignorance. Often, it is better to ask questions and clarify than to make assumptions that could lead to wasted time and effort. Clarifying questions are just one aspect of effective problem-solving, as Joury points out. Delving deeper into a problem and exploring various perspectives can enhance our understanding and creativity.
In my recent piece, "Mindfulness at Work: How can Meditative states help your work?", I discuss the benefits of shifting our mindset through meditation, which allows solutions to emerge naturally. According to Headspace, a mindfulness and meditation app, this state of mind is described as "a state of concentrated calm or serene attention." This definition perfectly encapsulates the essence of what I was trying to convey in my earlier article.
Achieving this serene concentration facilitates a smooth flow of questions and answers, akin to waves gently rolling onto the shore. This mental clarity can lead to the emergence of insights and solutions.
In connection with my previous and upcoming articles, another effective problem-solving strategy involves incorporating movement, especially meditative movement. As noted in a Harvard article titled "How simply moving benefits your mental health," engaging in physical activity can positively influence our thoughts and emotions. The article suggests that movement can provide a new perspective on a situation, enabling a mental shift that can lead to desired changes.
I would argue that not only does exercise and meditative movement elevate our mood, but they also stimulate our problem-solving abilities. Personally, I find that when I stop fixating on a problem, creative ideas begin to flow, and my intuition kicks in. Moreover, discussing challenges with a trusted companion often sparks outside-the-box thinking and creativity.
Ultimately, I believe that trusting your intuition is the most significant step you can take. Engaging in activities that promote mental clarity—be it exercise, music, thoughtful questioning, or companionship—will enhance your overall problem-solving skills. Like any skill, practice leads to improvement and greater experience.
