Chapter 1 Overview of the Hunza Tribe's Health
During my time with the Hunza people, I observed a striking absence of several common health issues. Cases of conditions such as asthenic dyspepsia, gastric or duodenal ulcers, appendicitis, mucous colitis, and even cancer were remarkably rare, despite my performing over 400 surgeries annually. While I can’t claim these ailments were completely absent, evidence suggests they were significantly less frequent among this community. My surgical interventions rarely involved the abdominal region, with most instances being related to strangulated hernias or the common parasite Ascaris lubricoides.
The Hunza people's sensitivity towards their abdominal health is generally tied to feelings of hunger rather than discomfort. This starkly contrasts with the digestive complaints prevalent in more industrialized societies, where gastrointestinal issues are common. To understand this disparity, I attribute it to four key factors:
- Natural Infant Rearing: Infants are breastfed, adhering to nature's intent. If breastfeeding fails, infants typically do not survive, thus avoiding future gastrointestinal problems often linked to early bottle-feeding.
- Wholesome Diet: The Hunza diet consists of unprocessed foods such as milk, eggs, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Very few have encountered processed items like canned salmon, chocolate, or commercial baby foods. In fact, their yearly sugar importation pales compared to the daily usage in a medium-sized hotel in London.
- Abstinence from Alcohol: Their religious beliefs prohibit alcohol consumption. Although some may not strictly adhere to these beliefs, the tribe largely maintains a teetotal lifestyle.
- Active Lifestyle: Their daily routines involve significant physical activity, contributing to their overall health.
