Finding True Belonging in a World of Roles

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Fulfillment
Every day, countless individuals awaken to the realization that another day has slipped away. Some find solace in solitude, while others are surrounded by loved ones. There are those who embody the roles of wife, mother, or daughter. Yet, how many truly experience a profound sense of belonging?
Simply playing a role doesn’t guarantee the fulfillment of the deep-seated needs within us. Many people feel isolated, even when their families are nearby. They may experience an emptiness despite having loving partners. The phrase “We are born alone, we die alone” transcends mere poetic sentiment; it encapsulates the essence of human existence. The journey into the world is one we undertake solo.
We often equate fulfillment with the absence of empty spaces at family gatherings or sharing a New Year's kiss with a cherished partner. Yet, what genuinely nourishes our spirit? It’s the awareness of being alive and complete that brings true satisfaction. This sense of wholeness is independent of the number of embraces received or kisses exchanged. We feel complete because we are inherently whole, recognizing that no one else can provide what only we can give ourselves: a sense of belonging to our own essence.
No one else can fill the void of years spent avoiding our true selves by seeking companionship as a substitute for happiness. Out of the many people in our lives, only a select few remain by our side, and even fewer have a genuine impact. When stripped of the labels of son or daughter, who are we at our core?
Yours,
Sophie
