Exploring Evolution: The Journey of Rob Brooks, Author and Biologist
Written on
Introduction to Rob Brooks
Rob Brooks is an evolutionary biologist who has the unique opportunity of merging his profession with his passion for writing. As a Professor of Evolution at UNSW Sydney, he teaches courses on Animal Behavior and the Evolution of Modern Society. His teaching reflects his fascination with how our ancestors' lives and environments have shaped contemporary human existence. His writings delve into similar themes, exploring the complex interplay between our evolved traits and today's cultural and economic realities.
Not an Ideal Beginning
Growing up with parents who were high school English teachers might suggest a strong foundation for a writing career. However, Rob's initial relationship with writing was anything but positive. In primary school, he struggled with handwriting and found the task of composing anything longer than a few sentences to be daunting. He envied classmates who effortlessly produced elaborate stories during assignments, while he felt overwhelmed by the challenge.
His handwriting issues stemmed from coordination difficulties, but by high school, he discovered a talent for drawing and painting. In a heartfelt gesture, he created a beautiful poster featuring one of his mother's favorite quotes, which she cherished during her teaching career.
"Of all those arts in which the wise excel, nature’s chief masterpiece is writing well." — André Breton
Sadly, writing well didn't come naturally to him. While he could craft essays on biology or literature competently, creative writing felt like an insurmountable obstacle. His inability to conjure imaginative narratives left him trapped in the ineffective "tell, don't show" approach that plagues many novice writers. In frustration, his father intervened, helping him grasp the essential shift in perspective needed for creative writing, though it didn't immediately spark a flourishing writing career.
A Reflection on Society
Rob's insights into human nature, gained through his research in evolution, eventually inspired him to consider what he truly wanted to pursue as an adult. He recognized that he had valuable, if sometimes sobering, perspectives to share. Fortunately, Stephen Pincock, a publisher at NewSouth Books, approached him after hearing of his intriguing stories.
This connection led to the commissioning of his first book, Sex, Genes & Rock ’n’ Roll: How Evolution Shaped the Modern World (2011). The writing process was enjoyable, as he incorporated humor and tackled captivating subjects such as obesity, marriage customs, and the phenomenon of rock stars dying at 27. The book even garnered Australia’s prestigious science book prize.
Around the same time, The Conversation emerged as an excellent platform for scientists wishing to engage a broader audience. Rob contributed a series of articles, known as The Natural History of the Present, until columns were phased out. This outlet remains a favored space for him, allowing him to connect with an engaged readership.
He loved the Natural History of the Present title so much that he adopted it for his personal blog, where a variety of his writings can be found, including his contributions to Medium.
Exploring Contemporary Issues
His recent endeavors include writing for Medium, where he has submitted drafts for his upcoming book. Over the past three months, he has published 15 pieces, covering topics from sexual robotics to public speaking tips, and even drawing parallels between modern America and apartheid-era South Africa.
As he revises his book, set for release in early 2021, he teases its content, which will delve into evolution, sex, technology, culture, and the future of humanity.
