Exploring Doom Eternal: A 2024 Retrospective

Chapter 1: A Return to Glory
Recently, I revisited the 2016 reboot of 'Doom', and it reignited my passion for the series. This nostalgic journey led me straight into the follow-up, 2020's 'Doom Eternal'. Without a doubt, this installment stands as my top choice in the 'Doom' franchise, which is quite a statement given my fondness for these games.
Before diving in, you can check my insights on the 2016 version here: Story.Image Source: IMDB. Credit: Bethesda Softwares.
Section 1.1: The Narrative Unfolds
The narrative follows the Doom Slayer as he battles to halt a demonic invasion on Earth. His mission encompasses taking down three Hell Priests and even confronting divine forces to save humanity from destruction.
This sequel introduces a plethora of unexpected twists and a greater number of cutscenes than its predecessor; however, players have the option to skip them if they prefer not to engage with the story. Despite this, I find the outlandish nature of the plot quite enjoyable. The game features dimension hopping, lore, and surprises that caught me off guard during my initial playthrough, adding a whimsical touch that enhances the experience.
Section 1.2: Diverse Environments
What captivates me most about the levels in 'Doom Eternal' is the retention of the verticality and fluidity from 2016's installment, paired with an expanded variety of environments.
Rather than being confined to a Martian base, players will navigate through distinct locations such as Desolated Earth, spaceships, remnants of a civilization dedicated to battling Hell, and even the realm of Heaven. Each area introduces unique set pieces and color schemes, creating a fresh feel for every level. One moment you might be engaged in combat within a grotesque nest, while the next you could find yourself near a serene forest and an overgrown castle.
Additionally, the game incorporates more platforming elements, which I find to be an enjoyable and brief diversion. This dynamic breaks up the fast-paced gameplay while maintaining its exhilarating essence. Expect to leap and dash through the air, grasping onto ledges and poles—one might wonder if the Doom Slayer indulged in yoga and gymnastics while in space. With his powerful physique, it wouldn't be surprising.
Chapter 2: Enhanced Arsenal
Section 2.1: Superior Equipment
The arsenal in 'Doom Eternal' is not only varied but significantly improved. Instead of the limited useful items from the previous game, players now have access to five memorable items:
- Hand Grenade
- Ice Grenade
- Flame Belch
- Chainsaw
- Crucible
The hand grenade operates similarly to its predecessor but can be upgraded to a scatter bomb. The chainsaw remains a brutal tool for dispatching demons, yielding ammo, health, and armor when combined with the Flame Belch. However, its gas charge limit is capped at three, and while it cannot be upgraded, it will recharge one use when running low.
The ice grenade freezes foes, providing a strategic pause and an opportunity for devastating combos with other weapons. The Flame Belch, a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, ignites enemies, causing them to drop armor. Lastly, the crucible, a massive sword acquired later in the game, can eliminate most enemies in a single strike, though it has a limit of three charges—perhaps a nod to its battery-operated nature.
