Discovering What Sets You Apart: A Unique Perspective

Written on

Chapter 1: The Concept of Uniqueness

In this continuation of my 'what if…?' series inspired by Scenario Cards—sets of cards designed to spark significant conversations, created by psychologists—I pose a thought-provoking question today:

What if you could pinpoint one attribute that distinguishes you? What defines your uniqueness?

I find it difficult to respond to this query because it seems implausible that there's just one trait that makes me stand out. Given the vast number of individuals on this planet—around seven or eight billion—it’s likely that someone else shares whatever unique quality I might claim. While countless motivational quotes and self-help material emphasize our individuality, proclaiming that there's 'no one quite like you on Earth, past or present,' I grapple with this notion. Sure, no one will ever be a carbon copy of me, Caitlin, but the uniqueness they refer to is about the intricate blend of my personality traits, interests, fears, preferences, and idiosyncrasies. All these elements combine to create my distinct identity.

Nonetheless, I hesitate to identify a singular characteristic that sets me apart. Could it be a bit presumptuous to think so? Perhaps 'self-important' is a better term? Regardless, I can’t help but feel that if I were to declare, "I am/think/do/feel ______" (insert any characteristic), there would likely be someone who could respond with, "Oh, I share that too!"

Thus, I find this question rather unhelpful! It seems to me that it is not a singular trait that differentiates me from others, but rather the multitude of qualities that together form who I am.

What about you? How do you perceive this question? Is there a single attribute that you believe sets you apart?
