14 Sobriety Slogans That Stay in My Mind Forever
Written on
Chapter 1: The Persistent Mantras
Throughout my journey of sobriety, I’ve encountered a myriad of slogans that, while often irritating, have left a lasting impression on me. These catchy phrases haunt me in everyday situations, such as when I'm searching for dish soap at Walmart and suddenly recall the phrase “think, think, think” — a memory from an old AA meeting.
As I’ve fluctuated in and out of sobriety, these phrases have become a part of my daily lexicon, even if I sometimes roll my eyes at their simplicity. Here are some slogans that seem to play on a loop in my mind, often heard in support groups, therapy sessions, and beyond.
Section 1.1: The Slogans That Stick
You Can’t Stay Clean on Yesterday’s Shower
While this may sound unpleasant at first glance, it serves as a crucial reminder that past efforts don’t guarantee current sobriety. Each day requires fresh commitment.
Easy Does It
In a world where I often feel the pressure to plan for the future, this saying encourages me to slow down. Although my instinct is to rush forward, I sometimes want to shake the elders who remind me to take it easy.
One Day at a Time
This phrase is probably the one I repeat most often, much to the annoyance of those around me. It’s a valuable reminder that focusing on today makes life feel more manageable.
It Works If You Work It
Though it may seem cliché, the truth in this saying resonates across various aspects of life — from recovery to parenting. I can almost hear the comforting voice of an AA chairman echoing in my ear.
Progress, Not Perfection
Perfection is unattainable, and this slogan helps ground me. As long as I’m moving forward, I’m on the right track.
Stick with the Winners
This one tends to rub me the wrong way. It’s a common piece of advice for newcomers, nudging them to connect with those who are thriving in their recovery.
Keep Coming Back
Although this is often said with good intentions, it can feel like a polite way of saying someone is struggling. It’s akin to a gentle nudge from a caring friend.
We’re Only as Sick as Our Secrets
I’ve repeated this phrase myself, but I don’t fully agree. I believe it’s okay to keep certain thoughts private, provided I’m coping in healthy ways.
Don’t Quit Before the Miracle Happens
This saying holds true for many endeavors, including writing. If I give up now, I may miss out on something wonderful.
Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes
If I want my life to improve, I must take action. This saying is a powerful motivator for me.
Life on Life’s Terms
This phrase serves as a reminder that acceptance is key to finding peace. I can only control my reactions to life’s unpredictability.
Time Takes Time
I often find myself impatiently wishing for quicker results, but I know that building a stable recovery takes time.
Do the Next Right Thing
This slogan has been a guiding light during my darkest days. In times of uncertainty, it helps to focus on taking small, positive steps.
Sobriety is Never Owned, Only Rented, and Rent is Due Every Day
This phrase brings to mind my therapist’s earnest inquiry about my daily efforts to maintain sobriety.
Do you find yourself recalling certain slogans from your own experiences, or am I alone in this?
