GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS
A TALE FROM NORTHERN EURASIA

A WOMAN WITH NO CHILD MET A BEAR IN THE FOREST. SHE FOLLOWED HIM TO HIS CAVE AND STAYED WITH HIM, EVENTUALLY GIVING BIRTH TO ‘BEAR SON’. THE BEAR DID
NOT WANT TO LET THEM GO BUT ‘BEAR SON’ DEFEATED HIM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO GET AWAY.
ONE DAY ‘BEAR SON’ AND HIS FRIENDS SAW A HOUSE IN THE WOODS. IT WAS EMPTY AND THEY WERE HUNGRY SO THEY WENT IN AND ATE ALL THE FOOD THEY FOUND. SORCERER DWARF CAME HOME, FOUND THEM AND A BIG FIGHT TOOK PLACE. ‘BEAR SON’ DEFEATED THE DWARF AND HUNG HIM BY HIS BEARD FROM A TREE. ‘BEAR SON’ AND HIS FRIENDS DEPARTED AND IN TIME DWARF WORKED HIMSELF FREE.
NOT EXACTLY THE GOLDILOCKS STORY WE HAVE COME TO KNOW.

AMONG THE OB-UGARIAN PEOPLE OF EASTERN ASIA, THE BEAR WAS NUM-TOREM, SON OF THE GOD OF HEAVEN.
